How Long Does Botox® Take to Work?

The countless selfies on your phone have made it clear that time is starting to show on your face. If you notice a few fine lines when you look in the mirror, you consider taking a drastic measure called Botox®. Many people see it as a way to smooth out wrinkles and keep a youthful look. However, if you’re new to Botox®, it’s a good idea to learn more about the treatment. The easiest way to start is by booking a consultation. Let’s go over how Botox® works, the time it takes to work, and how long it lasts.

What Is Botox® & How Does It Work?

Botox® is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox® is safe when used in very small, carefully controlled amounts. It’s used in both medicine and cosmetics to relax muscles and reduce wrinkles.

Botox® works by blocking a chemical called acetylcholine, which your nerves use to tell your muscles to move. When Botox® is injected into a muscle, it stops the nerve from sending the “contract” signal to that muscle. As a result, the muscle stays relaxed.

This process is known as chemical denervation because the muscle no longer receives signals from the nerve. Following is the science behind it:

  1. Binding: Botox® attaches to special spots on the nerve endings where nerves and muscles meet.
  2. Absorption: The nerve takes in the Botox®.
  3. Release: Botox® moves inside the nerve cell.
  4. Blocking the Signal: Botox® blocks the release of acetylcholine by cutting off certain helper proteins (called SNARE proteins). Without acetylcholine, the muscle doesn’t contract, so it stays relaxed and smooth.

The Botox® Results Timeline

Botox® doesn’t work right away; it takes some time to fully take effect. The following is what to expect after your injection:

  • Early Onset (24 to 72 Hours)
Botox® usually starts working within one to three days. During this time, it begins to block the signals that make your muscles contract. You might notice a slight softening of wrinkles, but the full effect isn’t visible yet.
  • Visible Changes (3 to 5 Days)
Most people start seeing noticeable results around three to five days after treatment. The muscles begin to relax more, and dynamic wrinkles like frown lines or crow’s feet start to fade. Your face may look more refreshed at this stage.
  • Full Results (7 to 14 Days)
The full effects of Botox® usually show up between one and two weeks after the injection. By now, the treated muscles are fully relaxed, and wrinkles appear much smoother. This is the ideal time to check your results and talk to your provider if you need a touch-up.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

Botox® usually lasts between three and six months, with most people seeing results for about three to four months. After that, muscle movement slowly returns, and wrinkles may start to come back. How long it lasts can depend on things like the area treated, how much Botox® is used, your metabolism, muscle size, and how often you get treatments.

Closing Note

Botox® takes at least three days to work after the injection. The reason Botox® doesn’t work right away is that it takes time to reach the muscle and start relaxing it. Once it gets into the muscle, it needs time to attach to the nerves and block the signals that tell the muscle to move.
